单词 jobbling
释义

jobblingadj.

Brit. /ˈdʒɒbl̩ɪŋ/, /ˈdʒɒblɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈdʒɑb(ə)lɪŋ/
Forms: 1600s iobling, 1800s– jobbling.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: an element of imitative or expressive origin, -ing suffix2.
Etymology: Apparently from a first element imitative of the sound and movement of the waves + -ing suffix2. Compare later jobble v., and also jobble n.2, jabble v.2It is not entirely certain that the early and later uses represent the same word. In quot. 1613 perhaps alternatively to be explained as a reduplication of hobbling adj.1 with variation of initial consonant, as there is no explicit mention of the sea or water. If so, the later use may independently derive < jobble n.2 + -ing suffix2.
Now rare.
That moves unevenly like a choppy sea. Also figurative.
