A form of Mahayana Buddhism practised in Japan whose adherents seek rebirth in the untainted transcendent realm associated with the Buddha Amitābha (known in Japan as Amida) as a step towards perfect enlightenment or Buddhahood; Pure Land Buddhism as practised in Japan.
