Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese Jōdo.
Etymology: < Japanese Jōdo (earlier Jaudo ) transcendent realm associated with particular Buddhas (7th cent.), the Western Paradise of Buddhist cosmology, specifically associated with Amida Buddha (9th cent.), a Buddhist sect focused on the veneration of Amida Buddha (14th cent.; < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese Jìngtǔ : see Pure Land n.). With sense 2 compare earlier Pure Land n.In use with reference to the Buddhist sect (see sense 1) compare also Japanese Jōdo-shū Jodo sect (12th cent.; compare Pure Land sect at Pure Land n. Compounds, and the discussion in that section), which is apparently reflected by post-classical Latin Jondaxuenses members of the Jodo sect (Montanus 1669 in a Dutch context (translated into English in 1671), itself apparently paraphrasing an earlier source). 1. A form of Mahayana Buddhism practised in Japan whose adherents seek rebirth in the untainted transcendent realm associated with the Buddha Amitābha (known in Japan as Amida) as a step towards perfect enlightenment or Buddhahood; Pure Land Buddhism as practised in Japan. Cf. Pure Land n. Compounds, Amidism n.rare before the late 19th cent.This form of Buddhism is associated with the practice of nembutsu recitation: see nembutsu n. 1.
