Januaryn.Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin Iānuārius; French janver. Etymology: Originally < classical Latin Iānuārius (see below); in later use (in β. forms) also < Anglo-Norman janver, genver, geniuer, janever, Anglo-Norman and Old French janvier, jenvier, genvier (1119; Middle French jannuer , Middle French, French janvier ) < classical Latin Iānuārius , in post-classical Latin also Ienuarius , use as noun (short for mēnsis Iānuārius month of January) of masculine of Iānuārius of or named after Janus < Iānus Janus n. + -ārius -ary suffix1; so called as Janus presided over the entrance into the year. Compare Old Occitan genier (late 12th cent.), Catalan gener (second half of the 13th cent.), Spanish enero (c1250; also regional (Navarre, Aragon) genero (first half of the 12th cent.)), Portuguese janeiro (13th cent.), Italian gennaio (1285); Middle Dutch januarius, januar (Dutch januari), German Januar (15th cent. as Januarius), Swedish januari (16th cent. as januarius). On the development of the ancient Roman calendar see note at September n. In Old English and Middle English texts Latin Ianuarius is often used for the month (in Old English sometimes alongside the vernacular name Æfterra Gēola), e.g.:eOE Bald's Leechbk.
