单词 jezebel
释义

Jezebeln.

Brit. /ˈdʒɛzəbɛl/, /ˈdʒɛzəbl/, U.S. /ˈdʒɛzəˌbɛl/, /ˈdʒɛzəb(ə)l/
Forms: 1500s Iesabelle, 1600s Iesabel, 1600s Iezabel, 1600s Jesebel, 1600s–1700s Jezabel, 1600s– Jezebel.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Jezebel.
Etymology: < the name of Jezebel, the wife of the biblical Ahab, king of Israel < post-classical Latin Hiezabel, Iezabel (Vulgate) or Hellenistic Greek Ἰεζαβήλ (Septuagint, New Testament), both < Hebrew ’Īzeḇel.According to the Old Testament (1 Kings 16:31, 19:1, 2, 21; 2 Kings 9:30–37), Jezebel was the Phoenician wife of King Ahab. She brought her own religion (which competed with Judaism in the Levant) to the Jewish court of Israel and promoted it in the kingdom more widely, and hence became associated with idolatry in Jewish and Christian tradition. This association developed further to encompass other practices regarded as sinful, especially sexual promiscuity. The story of her death, which she is said to have faced deliberately wearing fine clothes and make-up, probably reinforced these associations, since make-up was regarded as disreputable in some forms of Protestantism. The name is also mentioned once in the New Testament (Revelation 2:20) with explicit reference to false religion and sexual immorality. In Christian tradition, this has traditionally been taken to refer to the same person. Quot. 1558 is taken from a Protestant attack on the Catholic Mary I, invoking uses of the name in both the Old and New Testaments. Earlier evidence of the name. The biblical name is attested in English contexts from the Old English period onwards (in Old English as Gezabel, in Middle English as Iezabel, Iezebel, Iesabel, etc.). Compare also the following passage, in which it is unclear whether Iezabel should be interpreted as showing the name of the biblical character, or already a more general use as noun:a1400 Apocalypse St. John: A Version (Pepys) (1961) 19 By Iezabel ben bitokned þe maistres heretikes þat lyuen aftere þe wille of her flessch and techen aȝein þe godspell.
An immoral, impudent, or sexually promiscuous woman; (esp. in earlier use) a woman who leads other people into idolatry and sin (see Revelation 2:20); a prostitute or disreputable woman, esp. one who wears cosmetics, fine clothes, etc. Also figurative.Often modified by painted. In quot. 1558 the word refers back to ‘our mischeuous Maryes’: see etymological note.
