Etymology: < Hindi , apparently < Sanskrit jīva , 2nd singular imperative of jīv- to live ( < the same Indo-European base as post-classical Latin vīvere to live: see vivat int.).
Indian English.
A respectful form of address to a person in authority. Often as an honorific attached to a name, title, etc.
