Used attributively and in the possessive to denote apparatus and processes devised by Joly, as Joly method n. (also Joly's method) = Joly process n. Joly process n. (also Joly's process) Photography a process of colour photography using a screen ( Joly screen) ruled with a repeating sequence of adjacent orange, blue-green, and blue lines placed in front of the plate in the camera and a screen similarly ruled with red, green, and blue lines placed in contact with the transparency when it is being projected. Joly's steam calorimeter n. a device for determining the specific heat of a substance by measuring the weight of steam that condenses on a known mass of the substance in raising its temperature to that of the steam.
