Etymology: < Old French jaseran, -ant, jaz-, jac-, jesseran, jasiran, in Roland (11th cent.) jazerene = Provençal jazeran, Portuguese jazerão; in Spanish jacerina, Portuguese jazerina, Italian ghiazzerino; originally an adjective, in Old French osberc jazerenc, hauberc jazerant, in Spanish cota jacerina. Generally agreed to be of Saracen origin, and according to Diez probably identical with Spanish jazarino Algerian, < Arabic (al-) jazīrah ‘the island’, in plural Al-jazā ir, Algiers, in the old Arabic writers Jazīrah beni Mazighanan.
