Origin: Formed within English, as an acronym. Etymon: English Joint Photographic Experts Group.
Etymology: Acronym < the initial letters of Joint Photographic Experts Group, the name of the committee that devised the standard.
Computing.
Any of various techniques and standards for the compression of continuous-tone still images such as photographs; usually attributive, esp. designating images encoded according to such a standard. Also: an image encoded in this way; a file in which such an image is held (usually named with the file extension .jpg).
