Etymology: < Japanese kamidana < kami kami n.1 + -dana, combining form of tana shelf.
In a traditional Japanese household, a high shelf containing sacred objects of Shinto worship, such as a miniature shrine, and amulets and charms with inscriptions believed to ward off evil. Cf. god shelf n. at god n. and int. Compounds 1e.
