Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: judicial adj., care n.1, Denticare n.
Etymology: < judi- (in judicial adj., etc.) + care n.1, after Medicare n. and (in later use) Denticare n., etc.The name appears to have been popularized by Philip S. Habermann (1913–2003) of the State Bar of Wisconsin: see the article by him in Amer. Speech (1971) 46 306–7.

Any of various publicly funded systems for providing legal assistance to those otherwise unable to afford it; (frequently) spec. a system of this kind which arranges for payment to be made to private legal professionals, rather than employing them directly. Frequently attributive.The first such system to be so named was formed in Wisconsin in 1966.

Fortunately, up to this point, such a process of ‘judicare’ has not attracted general endorsement.
