Etymology: < Dutch kanna, †canna (Afrikaans kanna; see note), apparently < Khoekhoe.Early evidence of the Dutch word is difficult to trace, but it appears to have been in use in southern Africa in the 17th cent. The Dutch journal translated in quot. c1615 does not survive, but the French text of 1686 translated in quot. 1688 makes direct reference to a conversation with H. Claudius, a German physician and botanist, who worked for the governor of the Dutch settlement, probably in a Dutch-speaking environment.

Botany.

A South African succulent plant having white and yellow flowers with narrow, threadlike petals, Sceletium tortuosum (family Aizoaceae), the roots and leaves of which have traditionally been dried and chewed or smoked. Also: a preparation made from this plant.The alkaloid mesembrine, present in S. tortuosum, is thought to be responsible for the plant's antidepressant and mild euphoric effects.
