Etymology: In α. forms < (i) Ottoman Turkish cumʿa Friday (Turkish cuma ), and its etymon (ii) Arabic jumʿa Friday < jamaʿa to gather, to assemble (compare Persian jumʿa ); in β. forms via (iii) Persian jumʿat. In γ. forms < (iv) Arabic jumuʿa, a less common variant of jumʿa. The δ. forms show alteration of the γ. forms by association with β. -type forms. Friday is so called because it is the day on which the Muslim community gathers for communal worship.

Originally: Friday, considered as a holy day on which Muslims gather for religious worship. Hence: a congregational prayer service held on Friday. Frequently as a modifier, esp. in jummah prayer.
