Origin: A borrowing from Sanskrit. Etymon: Sanskrit karmamārga.
Etymology: < Sanskrit karmamārga < karman action, religious obligation (see karma n.) + mārga road, path (see marga n.).
Hinduism.
Action carried out in fulfilment of one's religious, social, and moral obligations, viewed as a means of attaining moksha (moksha n.). Contrasted with bhakti-marga n., jnana-marga n. Cf. karma-yoga n.

1849 Jrnl. Bombay Branch Royal Asiatic Soc. 3 i. 26 There are supposed to be three ways to salvation, the karma márga or way of ritual observances, the dnyána márga or way of knowledge, and the bhakti márga or way of devotion.
1937 A. Huxley Ends & Means xiii. 234 In India it is known as bhakti-marga, the path of devotional faith, as opposed to karma-marga, the path of duty or works, and jñana-marga, the path of knowledge.
