Etymology: < aspart- (in aspartic adj.) + -ame, of uncertain origin.
A derivative of phenylalanine that contains the radical of aspartic acid and is used as a low-calorie artificial sweetener; 3-amino-N-(α-methoxycarbonyl phenethyl)succinamic acid, C14H18N2O5.
