Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: junk n.1, store n.
Etymology: < junk n.1 + store n. Compare junk shop n.
Chiefly North American.
In early use: a store in which old or discarded items or materials that may be reused, such as old rope or textiles, bottles, scrap metal, worn-out machinery, etc., are bought and sold. Later: a store selling second-hand articles of any kind. Cf. junk shop n.In quot. 1777: (probably) a storehouse for used cables and ropes (see sense junk n.1 1).
