Etymology: < Kathleen ni Houlihan (Irish Caitlín Ní Uallacháin, Caitilín Ní Uallacháin), the name of a personification of Ireland.In its Irish form, the name is attributed to the 18th-cent. poet Liam Dall Ó hIfearnáin (William Heffernan), and was one of a range of female names used as personifications of the country in the (typically Jacobite) aisling poetry of the period (see aisling n.). The English form of the name was popularized during the Irish Revival, especially by the 1902 play Cathleen ni Hoolihan by W. B. Yeats (set in 1798), in which the title character is primarily referred to as ‘The Poor Old Woman’ (compare Shan Van Vocht n.), but near the end of the play introduces herself as ‘Cathleen the daughter of Hoolihan’. On the back of the title page, Yeats quotes from the anonymous (apparently Jacobite) song cited in quot. 1841. Variant forms. In Irish-language surnames, the element Ní in women's names (shortened < iníon Uí , literally ‘daughter of Ó’) is used as an equivalent to Ó in men's names (literally ‘grandson’: see O' n.⁴); both are commonly rendered as O' in Anglicized forms of such names (compare the β. forms).
