Etymology: Afrikaans, < Malay kentangkai a kind of fish.
South African.
Either of two marine game fishes: (a) Scomberomorus commersoni, of the family Scomberomoridæ, which may be six feet long, occurs in the Indo-Pacific ocean, and is also called barracuda; (b) Sarda sarda, of the family Scombridæ, a much smaller fish found in the Atlantic, and also called bonito.

1930 C. L. Biden Sea-angling Fishes of Cape vii. 144 The word ‘Katonkel’ has been corrupted from what was known by the Port Elizabeth Malays as ‘katunker’ or ‘katonker’ which originated from the original Malay word ‘kentangkai’, a kind of sea-fish.
1959 Cape Times 18 Feb. 2/4 This is the first time in eight years that so many barracuda (katonkels) have been caught at one time.
1974 Eastern Province Herald (Port Elizabeth) 1 Aug. 21 Katankel were a regular summer fishing feature of Port Elizabeth when the harbour breakwater was open to anglers.
