kibitzv.

Brit. /ˈkɪbɪts/, U.S. /ˈkɪbəts/, /kᵻˈbɪts/
Forms: 1800s– kibitz, 1900s kibetz, 1900s– kabitz, 1900s– kibbitz.
Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German kiebitzen.
Etymology: < German kiebitzen, kibitzen to look on at card games and give (often unwanted) advice to players (late 19th cent. or earlier), further etymology uncertain.Compare Yiddish kibetsn (early 20th cent.), and also German Kiebitz interfering onlooker at card games (early 20th cent.; < kiebitzen ). Further etymology. German kiebitzen is usually considered a variant of German (Rotwelsch) kiewischen , kiebitschen ‘to ransack, to search thoroughly’ (19th cent. or earlier), and this a loan < a supposed Yiddish form *koyvesh (in *koyvesh zayn to oppress), with folk-etymological alteration after German Kiebitz lapwing, peewit (see kiewiet n.). However, Yiddish *koyvesh zayn ‘to oppress’ is apparently not attested; if it did exist, the semantic fit with the German verb and noun would not be perfect. Its etymology would be < koyvesh ( < Hebrew kōḇēš , participle of kāḇaš to subdue, to bring into bondage, in post-biblical Hebrew also to oppress) + zayn to be ( < Middle High German sīn : see be v.). In the light of these difficulties, it is conceivable that German kiebtizen may be directly < Kiebitz ‘lapwing, peewit’, the semantic motivation perhaps being that the interfering onlooker is compared to a bird which flutters about and potentially disturbs people with its twittering.
colloquial (originally U.S.).
