Etymology: < junk n.1 + man n.1
Originally and chiefly North American.
A person who deals in old or discarded items or materials, such as old rope or textiles, bottles, scrap metal, worn-out machinery, etc.; a junk dealer. In later use: spec. a person who travels round an area collecting old clothes and other unwanted items in order to sell them (cf. rag-and-bone man at rag-and-bone adj. 1).
