Forms: Also 1500s cade, 1600s (? kidde), kaid, 1700s–1800s kead.
Etymology: Of unknown derivation; the phonology points to cāde as the etymological form; this would give northern English and south. Scots keäd, keäde, which, on the analogy of heäd head, would be anglicized as kead, ked/kɛd/.
A sheep-tick or sheep-louse ( Melophagus ovinus).
