Etymology: < post-classical Latin justificator (of Christ) person who justifies (4th or 5th cent. in Augustine), judge (from 11th cent. in British sources; 12th cent. in a continental source), advocate (from 12th cent. in British sources) < justificat- , past participial stem of justificare justify v. + classical Latin -or -or suffix. Compare earlier justifier n.Compare Middle French, French justificateur (c1495 in an apparently isolated attestation in a theological context with reference to Christ, subsequently from 1845; 1516 as adjective). In quot. 1670 with reference to the following occurrence of post-classical Latin justificator in a late 11th-cent. charter:a1100 Writ of William II, Ramsey in W. D. Macray Chronicon Abbatiae Rameseiensis (1886) 211 Willelmus Rex Angliæ H. camerario & justificatoribus suis omnibusque suis fidelibus, salutem [William, King of England, greets his chamberlain, his judges, and all his faithful subjects].
