keenadj.adv.

Brit. /kiːn/, U.S. /kin/
Forms: Old English céne, Middle English–1500s kene, Middle English ken, Middle English–1600s keene, (Middle English Scottish keyne, 1500s kein(e), 1600s– keen.
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Common Germanic: Old English céne = Old Saxon *kōni (Middle Dutch coene, Dutch koen), Middle Low German kône, kœne, Old High German chôni, chuoni (Middle High German küene, German kühn), Old Norse kœnn < Old Germanic *kōnjo-. There are no cognates outside of Germanic. The original meaning is somewhat obscure. The prominent sense in Old English, as in Low and High German, was that of ‘bold, brave,’ but Old Norse kœnn meant only ‘expert, skilful, clever’, a sense also represented in Old English (Old Danish kiön, kön, Old Swedish kön, kyn, ‘bold’, are apparently < Low German, the original Scandinavian sense being found in Old Danish lovkiön ‘learned in the law’.) It has been suggested that the Old Norse sense is the original one, the connecting link with the other being the idea of ‘skilled in war’, ‘expert in battle’ (= Old Norse vígkœnn), but there is no clear evidence of this. The development of the specifically English sense ‘sharp’ is also obscure.
