Etymology: < Japanese keyaki, (regional) kiyaki, kiyake (15th or 16th cent.; 1603 as Qeyaqi in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam, 1784 as Keaki in C. P. Thunberg Flora Iaponica 228) < a first element of uncertain origin, perhaps keya conspicuous, different (on account of the unusual grain of its wood; < ke other, strange) + -ki tree.
A deciduous tree, Zelkova serrata (family Ulmaceae), native to Japan and other parts of eastern Asia, commonly planted as a shade tree and formerly for timber. Also: the pale, fine grained, elm-like timber of this tree. Cf. zelkova n.
