Etymology: Probably partly < key n.1 + -ing suffix1, and partly < key v. + -ing suffix1.
1. The action of fixing or fastening something, or the fact of being fixed or fastened, esp. with a pin, wedge, or bolt. In later use also: the adhesion of a substance to a surface. Cf. key v. 2.
