Used attributively with reference to an extinct hominid similar to Neanderthal man, known from fossil remains found at a mine at Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia (now Kabwe, Zambia), in 1921, originally called Homo rhodesiensis and now often grouped with H. heidelbergensis. Cf. Broken Hill n., Saldanha n.The hominid was formerly known as Rhodesian man and is now dated to between 300,000 and 125,000 years ago. ΚΠ 1972 S. Afr. Archaeol.
