Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Kabwe.
Etymology: < Kabwe (Lenje Kabwe , literally ‘small stone’; formerly Broken Hill), the name of the capital of the Central Province of Zambia, where the fossil was found. Compare earlier Rhodesian man n. at Rhodesian adj.2 and n.1 Compounds and Broken Hill n.
Palaeontology.
Used attributively with reference to an extinct hominid similar to Neanderthal man, known from fossil remains found at a mine at Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia (now Kabwe, Zambia), in 1921, originally called Homo rhodesiensis and now often grouped with H. heidelbergensis. Cf. Broken Hill n., Saldanha n.The hominid was formerly known as Rhodesian man and is now dated to between 300,000 and 125,000 years ago.

2009 I. Tattersall Fossil Trail (ed. 2) xvii. 232 Mallegni and colleagues also found resemblances in Ceprano to the (probably much) later Kabwe skull from Zambia.
