Etymology: < Czech koruna kind of coin (1847 or earlier), monetary unit of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (1892), monetary unit of Czechoslovakia (1918; specific use of koruna crown n.), and its equivalent Slovak koruna, both after German Krone krone n.1In the plural form koruny after the Czech plural koruny and its Slovak equivalent (both used with numbers from two to four and when quantity is unspecified). The form korun reflects Czech korun and its Slovak equivalent, (genitive) plural used with numbers of five and higher.
The principal monetary unit of Czechoslovakia until its partition in 1993, and subsequently of the Czech Republic and (until 2009) of Slovakia, consisting of 100 halers (hellers); (also) a coin representing one koruna.Introduced as the Czech koruna (abbreviated ) after the 1914–18 war, and replaced and revalued after the 1939–45 war as the Czech and Slovak koruna (abbreviated Kčs).Slovakia adopted the euro (Euro n.2 1a) in January 2009.
