单词 | kosovar |
释义 | Kosovarn.adj. A. n. A native or inhabitant of Kosovo; a person of Kosovar descent. Often used to refer specifically to an inhabitant of Kosovo of Albanian ethnicity.Kosovo is a landlocked country in south-eastern Europe, bounded by Macedonia to the south, Albania and Montenegro to the west, and Serbia to the north and east; its precise boundaries have varied in different periods. It was part of the medieval Serbian Empire, and came under Ottoman rule in the mid 15th cent., remaining part of the Ottoman Empire (latterly as a separate province or vilayet) until 1912, when it was absorbed into Serbia (after 1918 part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia)). In the 1980s and 1990s increasing ethnic tensions and unrest in the province (it was never a constituent republic of Yugoslavia) led to the Kosovo war (1998–9), after which Kosovo was placed under transitional United Nations administration until formally declaring its independence in 2008 (although this has not been universally recognized).
