Etymology: < Albanian kosovar < Kosovë (definite form Kosova ), the name of the country ( < Serbian Kosovo , use as noun of a neuter form of the possessive adjective in Kosovo polje : see note) + -ar , suffix denoting an inhabitant of a place. With use as adjective compare earlier Kosovan adj.The country takes its name from the plain of Kosovo (Albanian Fusha e Kosovës, Serbian Kosovo polje), an extensive plateau to the north and south of Prishtina (Priština in Serbian), on which a famous battle took place in 1389 between the Turks and the Serbs (the latter allied with Hungarians, Albanians, and others).
