Etymology: < French kilomètre (1795): see kilo- comb. form and metre n.2 (The stress is marked by Webster (1828), Craig, and Cassell as kiˈlometre.)
In the Metric system, a measure of length containing 1000 metres, or 3280.89 feet, or nearly five-eighths of a mile. Also in combinations, as kilometre-stone (cf. milestone n.).
