Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili kinara.
Etymology: < Swahili kinara candleholder < ki-, diminutive class prefix + mnara tower, lighthouse, derivative (with class prefix m-, denoting large size) of nuru light < Arabic nūr.The Swahili plural form, vinara, is occasionally used in English contexts.
Originally and chiefly North American.
A candleholder for seven candles, used in celebrating the festival of Kwanzaa.The candles placed in the kinara represent the seven principles of Kwanzaa and are of three colours: three red, one black, and three green.
