单词 knablick
释义

knablickn.adj.

Brit. /ˈnablɪk/, U.S. /ˈnæblɪk/, Scottish English /ˈnablɪk/
Forms:

α. English regional (Lancashire) 1700s–1800s knoblock, 1800s knobluck.

β. Scottish 1700s knabliech, 1800s– knablich, 1800s– knablick, 1800s knablock, 1800s knabblick, 1900s– knablach.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: knob n., -le suffix, -ock suffix; English knab , knob n., -lock.
Etymology: Apparently originally (in α. forms, in English regional (Lancashire) use) < knob n. + -le suffix + -ock suffix; compare earlier knobble n. In later use (in β. forms) < knab, variant of knob n. + Scots -lock, diminutive suffix (see knibloch n.), probably often perceived as a variant of the earlier and closely-related knibloch n.With use in Lancashire with reference to coals (compare quot. 1757 at sense A.) compare quot. 1849 at knobble n. 2.
A. n. Scottish (chiefly north-eastern) and English regional (Lancashire).
A small piece or lump of something; (Lancashire) a lump of coal. Also: a small or irregularly-shaped stone. Cf. knibloch n., knobble n. 2.
