Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < kindergarten n. + -er suffix1, after German Kindergärtner (see below), and partly (in β. forms) < German Kindergärtner kindergarten teacher (1852 or earlier) < Kinder- , combining form of Kind child (see child n.) + Gärtner gardener (see gardener n.), after Kindergarten kindergarten n.
