Biochemistry.
Any of various basic substances or mixtures obtained by partial hydrolysis of proteins and thought at one time to be the kernel or nucleus of the proteins from which they were derived; also used with prefix indicating the protein, as glutokyrine.

Siegfried] to suggest the generic name kyrine for them with the implication that they were the kernel, or nucleus, of the molecular structure of the proteins from which they were derived. This view was founded upon the resistance to hydrolysis of the kyrines under the conditions employed in their preparation.
