Etymology: < king n. + of prep. + arms n. (compare arms n. 5), after post-classical Latin rex armorum (c1406 in British sources). Compare post-classical Latin rex de armis (1469 in British sources), French roi d'armes (1420 in Middle French). Compare later King at Arms n.
(The title of) a herald who grants the right to wear or display arms; spec. (usually with distinguishing word) each of the three chief heralds of the College of Arms: Garter, the senior King of Arms (cf. garter n. 6a), Clarenceux, who has jurisdiction south of the Trent (cf. Clarenceux n.), and Norroy, who has jurisdiction north of the Trent and (since 1943) in Northern Ireland (cf. Norroy n.).Other heralds include Bath King of Arms (cf. bath n.1 19b) and the title is also used of similar officers in other countries.(Lord) Lyon King of Arms: see Lyon n., Lord Lyon n. at lord n. and int.
