(The title of) an officer in the British royal household having the role of marking or announcing the time during Lent by crowing like a cockerel or rooster, as a reminder of St Peter's denial of Jesus (see note). Often more fully King's (or Queen's) cock-crower. historical.The gospels recount that after Jesus had been arrested St Peter denied knowing him three times before the cock crowed the next morning (see e.g. Matthew 26:69–75), as Jesus had prophesied at the Last Supper.
