Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: king n., -let suffix.
Etymology: < king n. + -let suffix. Compare earlier roitelet n.Originally after French roitelet minor king (see roitelet n.), also denoting a small bird (mid 15th cent. in Middle French). In sense 2 originally after Spanish reyezuelo (1607 or earlier in this sense). Compare post-classical Latin regulus wren (see regulus n.).
1. A minor or inferior king; (also) a king ruling over a small territory. Chiefly depreciative. Cf. kingling n. 2.
