Etymology: < Dutch kriek black cherry, beer with cherry flavour (a1400 in Middle Dutch denoting a type of cherry or plum; with the use denoting beer compare also Dutch kriekbier , kriekenbier , krieklambik , kriekenlambik ), probably < classical Latin graecum , neuter singular of graecus (see Greek adj.), probably after post-classical Latin prunum graecum, lit. ‘Greek plum’ (although this is first attested later: 1517 in a Latin–Dutch glossary).

A style of Belgian beer with a distinctive sour cherry flavour, traditionally made by slowly fermenting lambic beer with morello cherries. Also more fully Kriek-lambic.Originally specific to the Brussels area and using the variety of cherry growing in the Schaarbeek area north-east of the city, krieks are now also commercially brewed elsewhere (see quot. 1995).
