Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi kirānā.

Etymology: < Hindi kirānā, apparently < an unattested Prakrit formation with the sense ‘(that) which is bought’, ultimately < Sanskrit krī to buy (3rd singular passive krīyate is bought; < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek πρίασθαι to buy: see amobr n.); compare -āna, suffix forming medio-passive present participles. Compare Prakrit kiriāṇa and (with further suffixation) kiyāṇaga salt, spices, which probably reflect regional variants of the unattested form underlying Hindi kirānā.Sense 2 was formed within English, apparently as a shortening of kirana store and similar compounds (compare Hindi kirānā sṭor convenience store, after English).
