Etymology: < classical Latin labium lip, in post-classical Latin and scientific Latin also edge of a surgical incision or wound (14th cent. or earlier), lip of the female genitals (end of the 16th cent. or earlier; chiefly in plural), (in botany) lip of a labiate corolla (1623 or earlier), (in zoology) lip of the aperture of a gastropod mollusc (1758 or earlier; 1771 or earlier specifically denoting the inner lip), (in certain insects) segment that forms the floor of the mouth (1775 or earlier) < the same Indo-European base as lip n. Compare earlier labies n.In sense 6 probably after German Labium (1731 or earlier in this sense); compare earlier labial adj. 5. In plural form labia after the Latin plural form.
