Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin lablab.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin lablab (1592 or earlier) < Arabic lablāb. Compare scientific Latin Lablab, genus name ( M. Adanson Familles des plantes (1763) I. 325; 1753 or earlier as specific epithet).The form leblab reflects fronting of the short a in Arabic in interconsonantal position; compare post-classical Latin leblab (1601 or earlier).
The perennial leguminous climbing plant Lablab purpureus, probably native to tropical Africa but widely cultivated elsewhere for its edible pods and seeds and as a fodder plant and green manure; any of numerous cultivated varieties of this plant; (occasionally) a seed of this plant. Also called hyacinth bean, bonavist.
