Etymology: < a prep.1 + cock v.1 + bill n.2 (although this is first attested later in the relevant sense: see bill n.2 4). Compare later acock adv.
Nautical.
Of an anchor: with the bills pointing upwards, as when it hangs from the cathead ready for dropping. Also of the yards of a vessel: at an angle with the deck.In quot. 1912 in extended use.The yards of vessels are sometimes angled in this way as a sign of mourning.
