Etymology: < an African language of Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast).
A wasting disease that is caused by an insufficient intake of protein by the body and chiefly affects young children in tropical countries, producing apathy, oedema of the extremities, desquamation, and partial loss of pigmentation (and is generally associated with diarrhoea and stunted growth), and leading in severe cases to death.

1935 C. D. Williams in Lancet 16 Nov. 1151/1 The name ‘kwashiorkor’ indicates the disease the deposed baby gets when the next one is born, and is the local name in the Gold Coast for a nutritional disease of children, associated with a maize diet.
1951 G. C. Shattuck Dis. Tropics lvii. 695 The early stage of kwashiorkor is difficult to recognize. Probably there are many mild cases which never develop the typical syndrome.
1954 New Biol. 17 20 One of the commonest diseases, called Kwashiorkor, is associated with protein deficiency in the diet when young and especially at the stage when breast-feeding ceases and no very suitable foods to replace it are available.
