Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Micmac.
Etymology: Apparently < Micmac.The Micmac etymon does not survive and is not attested independently; the language today uses an unrelated word for this fish. The plural kyack-cooks cited in quot. 1965 reflects a Micmac plural form, with the addition of the English plural ending -s. Compare the following (late) passage, apparently citing the Micmac word in an English context:1965 Canad. Geogr. Jrnl. June 209/1 ‘Alewives’ is the common name used in Britain and New Zealand, while the MicMac Indians called the fish ‘kayaks’, and in Latin it's Pomolobus pseudoharengus.
North American (chiefly Maritime Provinces and Maine).
