Etymology: < authorit- (in authority n.) + -arian suffix. Compare French autoritaire (1865 as adjective, 1885 as noun), Spanish autoritario (1869 as adjective, a1875 as noun), Italian autoritario (1863 as adjective; also as noun), German autoritär, adjective (1871).In form autoritarian probably largely after the forms in the foreign languages.
