Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin auctoritative , -ly suffix2; authoritative adj., -ly suffix2.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin auctoritative in an authoritative way or manner, with authority (10th cent.; from 14th cent. in British sources; < auctoritativus authoritative adj. + classical Latin , suffix forming adverbs) + -ly suffix2. In later use also partly < authoritative adj. + -ly suffix2.
