Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: proper name Labrador , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < Labrador (see Labrador n.) + -ite suffix1, after French labradorite (1803 or earlier) or its model German Labradorstein ( A. G. Werner Versuch einer Mineralogie I. (1780) i. 150), so called because it was first found in Labrador. N.E.D. (1901) gives the pronunciation as (læbrădǫ·rəit) /læbrəˈdɒraɪt/.
Mineralogy.
A mineral of the plagioclase feldspar group, typically greyish-white and sometimes showing blue iridescence, which occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks (esp. basalt and gabbro). Cf. earlier Labrador spar n. at Labrador n. 2d, Labrador stone n. at Labrador n. 2a.Labradorite is an aluminosilicate of calcium and sodium; (Ca,Na)(Si,Al)4O8. Crystal system: triclinic.
