Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Labyrinthodon.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Labyrinthodon, former genus name (R. Owen, 1841: see quot. 1841) < ancient Greek λαβύρινθος labyrinth n. + ὀδοντ- , ὀδούς tooth (see -odon comb. form); compare note at glyptodon n. Compare labyrinthodont n.
Palaeontology (now chiefly historical).
Originally: any of the large fossil amphibians of the (ill-defined) genus Labyrinthodon (probably equivalent to the temnospondyl genus Mastodonsaurus), regarded as the typical form of labyrinthodont; (in form Labyrinthodon) the genus itself. In later use: = labyrinthodont n.
