Any of a group of copper-containing enzymes which catalyse the oxidation of quinols to semiquinones.The first laccase was identified in the sap of the lacquer tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum (cf. lac n.1 3), but these enzymes are now known to be present in certain other plants and in many fungi.
