Etymology: < post-classical Latin auctrix (also authrix (1529 or earlier; 1628 in the passage translated in quot. 1649 at sense 2)) female origin or source of (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), feminine form corresponding to classical Latin auctor author n.; < classical Latin auct- , past participial stem of augēre auge v. + -trīx -trix suffix. Compare earlier auctrice n.
Obsolete.
