Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin lacerta , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin lacerta lizard (see lacert n.1) + -ian suffix, after French lacertien (1817 as noun, denoting a family of reptiles: Cuvier Le règne animal II. 22; 1839 or earlier as adjective).
Chiefly Zoology.

Of or relating to lizards; lizard-like, saurian. In zoological use now chiefly historical (cf. lacertilian adj.).
