Etymology: < classical Latin lacerta lizard (see lacert n.1) + -ine suffix1. With sense A. 1 compare scientific Latin lacertinus , specific name (1766), Lacertina , genus name ( F. C. Meuschen Museum Gronovianum (1778) 43)). Compare French lacertin (1805 or earlier in sense A. 1). Compare earlier lacertian adj. and (with use as noun) earlier lacertian n.
